Fidelio

You watch about 10 (new or old, but fresh) movies every month. You like about 3 of them. As this goes on for a while you end up starting to collect the complete set of movies created by the director who saw the world the way you see it or of an actor whose performance you admired, whom, you couldn't be, but couldn't resist wanting to be. That's how anyone starts following a genre, actor, style of making.

Once in a while you come across a movie that just cleaves softly through your head, passing through the skull and spreading all over your brain. Every background beat stings on different places on your brain making you feel alive. Every bright flash on screen enlightening you. Every moment of darkness puts you at ease and alert at the same time.

Very few movies do this and one the impulses one sends to one person isn't the same that it sends another.

Followed by 'A Clockwork Orange', 'Eyes wide shut' just carried me off to an entirely different society. A world on its own with it's Christmas lighting, oh, the pretty, selective dark theme, slow (real slow) motions, unbroken, long dialogues that start from nowhere, goes everywhere setting up different moods and ends up at an entirely different humour. The beauty of the selection of the right words that brings out the right emotions was like the best beans chosen to bring out the best aroma.

A person under a mask could be capable of anything. He could be harmless; he could be a killer; he could be a lover; he could be delicate; he could be diabolic; he could be an animal; he could be tender-hearted. But... you just wouldn't know.

Interestingly, a thriller with not a drop of blood spill.

The grandiose of the open party displaying the power of people and money; the (very) short sideline story at the small space of the costume rental shop; another short story of two girls living on their own; they are all connected, related, one flowing through another and all are floating on the same silent lake.

The masked ball is one of the most thrilling, quiet, slow, chilling, nearly freezing arrangement. Every beat, every mask, every action, every bending and balancing tells you how serious an affair the ball is. What could the mystery behind this mask, or that one, oh, why are those two masks so different from the rest? You keep talking as he keeps walking.

Followed by the orgy and the humiliation of the lead character in front of the entire secret mob.

The humiliation of unveiling in front of a group of masked men by command and the helplessness, owing to the lack of knowledge of whom you are surrounded by and how powerful they are, transfers through.

Of course, there's too much of exposing and an elaborate orgy.

With not a gun or knife in sight the pressure in the atmosphere slowly starts increasing by the grandness of the mansion and by the mystery behind the masks.

A clear, clever thriller through and through.

Do you believe in God or Science?

Having added a few BBC documentaries to the download queue I waited to initiate the 'Download' process at 2.00 am (well, it's not the best data plan, but what to do?). As it was just 11.30 pm I chose to watch a movie until then which has led me to write this.

Contact (1997):  7.3 - IMDB Rating (This is not a movie review)

Contact (1997) Poster

Of the 150 minutes the movie simply throws a hundred questions that intrigues a few hundred more in your mind, not just related to science and beliefs but also on truth and delusion, facts and faiths, approved and accepted.

More than E.T life discovery, wormhole, space travel, science fiction and the other science stuff dealt with, this movie a lot about a scientist's life, beliefs and struggle against those of the rest of the world naturally.

The pain of being neither able to concord with others' beliefs nor get an opportunity to prove them wrong is cruel. Rejection of any material is nothing compared to the rejection of one's own ideas and beliefs.

People might say 'world is what you make out of it'. Well, it's more like saying a structure (like a material structure or community based on ideology) is what you design and construct. Nothing could sound truer if one is to design and construct on an empty space.

But is the world we live in an empty space? Is it not already loaded with beliefs, some backed by facts and others by mere faith. Questioning the belief of the majority of Earth's population is not considered very wise especially when that 95% is a community that is just afraid of taking up the responsibility of their own actions and consequences but just is contented with fatalism.

One cannot simply make the world as he believes it should be even if it should be so.

Across the world the human life expectancy is 67.2 years (says wikipedia, may or may not be correct and that doesn't matter much anyway). During these years some of us want to find out whether what we are told is true and strive for evidences so as to educate the future leading them to development where they could be surrounded by sound facts (religious or scientific whichever is proven right) while the others are just happy to believe what was told to them and continue to lead the next generation into the same darkness they dwelt happily. Surely ignorance is bliss.

Following the previously laid patterns and beliefs holds harmony in one's life while on the other hand advancement needs experimentation which, of course, comes with a few risks.

Are we afraid to admit that questioning and experimentation may eventually demolish the foundation over which 'the morals and principles of living' constructed over the years?

'Do (as bid) and Move (as said)' will not be plausible in a community that seeks an explanation for 'Why and What, if not?'

You response to the question 'Do you believe in God or Science?' either earns you acceptance and recognition in a community or tags you  as 'not be trusted or heeded to' and simply disqualifies your statements and beliefs no matter how factual they are.

The irony is that this is the qualifying question even in fields which has nothing to do with one's religious and scientific belief.

On a land where majority of the humans walk on two feet and strain to maintain balance, one who bends his torso and puts his hands on the ground like an ape and walks feeling perfectly comfortable would be laughed at and be called a stupid.

People tend to follow a system or scheme, howsoever unstable it is, just to be accepted in the human community and in fear of being tagged as a circus ape.

Minds stubborn enough not to accept even the proven facts, on the other hand, could never be helped.

If one's beliefs towards religion or science has no impact on his reputation, respect or nature I wonder if the whole lot will still be clinging to those beliefs however fictional or factual they are?

I wish one day everyone could understand that beliefs are one's own way to find harmony and ones beliefs are not to be inflicted on others just because one could, with his power.

The Woman in Black (WIB)

The title doesn't speak about a woman coming in Black Dress to save the Earth from Aliens or from any green man like MEN IN BLACK.

This movie has no relation at all with the Hollywood MIB.

WIB could be just another Tamil movie if the costume of the woman was WHITE.

May be in Hollywood if a ghost is shown with white dress outdoors it wouldn't be easy to distinguish it from the snowy background and that could be a reason they went for Black.

Apart from the costume, the movie has a lot of interesting stuff. It has been a long time since I had had goosebumps. WIB gave me goosebumps. It makes you feel the shiver starting at the back of your neck and travels through the spine towards your heel.

A single line story with not many pages of dialogues not long playing musical melodies or so.

Daniel Radcliffe still doesn't look like a father for a 4 year old, could have chosen a brother role or some 'AMERICAM GROOM'. May be he just would have wanted to be 'Direct'a HERO' or whatever.

A tug of war between rationality and superstitions, where finally the majority wins!

Arthur thinks that, after finding the cause of all the impossible to understand deaths, reuniting the baby with the Dead mother would give her peace and she would spare the lives of other children.

But that did no good at all.

Arthur was sent to analyse the papers in the 'Eel Marsh House' to find the final will of Mrs. Alice Drablow (WIB).

He reads all the greetings she has written for her son and the letter to her husband, where she would have mentioned 'I will never forgive'.

When Arthur finds the body of the boy and reunites it with the dead mother he says 'Its all over' we would already know it's not over yet. Then again repeating the words of Mrs. Drablow 'Will never forgive' in his thoughts was redundant information to be provided.

Not many twists or anything for someone who would have watched Sherlock Holmes or any of Christopher Nolan's movies.

Not much strain for your brain.

WIB - Doesn't need to be dubbed in Tamil, but could just be muted and played for the Tamil audience. Would suit better.

Movies being made focusing on the 'still 1980's people is a wonder.

WIB is full of Wonders IMHO.

Enjoyable though for the Goosebumps

Perfume: the Story of a Murderer - and the Subtitles

Have you ever tried reading the subtitles of the movies?

Few of you may not even read 'em while watching the movies, thinking they may be disturbing.

True!

But ever tried to read them after you've seen a movie?

If you're watching a movie at 30fps (Frames per second) then reading the subtitles mean, watching it at 300fps.

As you watch a movie if you miss any interesting scene, you PAUSE, REWIND (Drag the slider back and forth) and then PLAY. But, that's not gonna happen when you are reading the subtitles.

I just realizes this when i read the subtitles of "Perfume: The story of a murderer (2006)", after two weeks since I watched it.

For who knows what reason, I liked this movie and I happened to watch it over 5 times, the following week.

It was about a guy named 'Jean-Baptiste Grenouille' who was born with an unusual talent of sensing all kinds of smell, who kills young and pretty women, preserves their bodies, processes them and creates perfume which could enslave the whole world.

A musical movie may have music every single second that your heart beats; an action movie may have stunning stunts and O.M.G. crashes.

'Perfume: the story of a murderer' has SMELL.

A pleasant, sweet, 'don't know how to describe' kind of smell penetrates the TV screen and keeps floating just around the tip of your nose as you get your face dipped into this little pond of perfume.

At the end of the movie as Jean-Baptiste applies the perfume on himself and appears in front of the crowd that wants him to be hanged for having murdered the women of their city, the whole crowd becomes speechless and looks him as an Angel; like the God.

They lose themselves at the beauty of the perfume that Jean-Baptiste created by using the extracts that he processed from the bodies of the women he killed and declare him innocent. The ferocious crowd that wanted a man to be hanged declares him Innocent in unison, being mesmerized by the smell of HIS PERFUME.

When you're watching the movie you may feel that the whole crowd is actually pleading you to declare him innocent.

When you hear the people who have blacked-out saying,

"This man is innocent!

He didn't do it. It's impossible!

He's innocent!

He's innocent!

This is no man!

This is an angel!"

even you may want to declare him innocent.

And when you're reading the subtitles this feeling lasts 10 times longer.

If you can smell that perfume for two mins as you watch the movie then you may feel it for 20 minutes when you're reading the subtitles.

From then on, when I have time but not allowed to watch a movie, I read!

I read the subtitles of the movies which i wanted to watch 10 more times.

You don't just read the dialogues of the actors and actresses as you read the subtitles.

You hear them talking them, in your mind. You hear the exact voice with the exact tone, exact modulation and exact accent like you have seen in the movie previously, no matter how many days before you had seen the movie.

As for me the shortcut for watching a movie 11 times would be:
Watch it once,
Read the subtitles once.
and that makes it 11 times.

Enjoy reading the subtitles.
